You know I'm simply smitten with the new flowers coming out. I just can't get enough of this modern series Dawn has created. Yana introduced the Modern Peonies set yesterday. I decided I couldn't choose between the two new sets. Lucky for me they were designed to work together, so I didn't have to choose!

I recently purchased the new Tim Holtz Distress Oxide Inks and was really interested to see not only the background I could create but also how they work with my Copic markers. I learned some things along the way I'm happy to share them with you in the video below.

The over all finish of the card is a bit more matte because of the chalk-like finish the inks have but it's really cool. The Copics layered over the inks with no problem and I love the way the card came out.

May 2017 Release Week: Modern Peonies with Yana

Hello and welcome back to our May 2017 Release previews! Today, we have a new floral set that we hope you will love. Illustrated in the same style as our previously released Modern Petunias, the Modern Peonies stamp set and Modern Peonies Companion Die are a great addition to our floral family.

Every floral stamp set holds a number of creative possibilities and the Modern Peonies set is no exception. One can stamp and die-cut flowers to arrange them into a gorgeous floral cluster or realistic looking bouquet; stamp, mask off and stamp some more to create a stunning one layer floral arrangement; combine all images or use a single flower to create unique stamped patterns.

I decided to not do the obvious today, but rather take just one image from the Modern Peonies stamp set and use it to stamp a gorgeous, somewhat random pattern. I picked the smallest flower, a flower bud, but one can also use large and medium sized flower to create similar looking patterns.

One of the wonderful things about this set is it's scale. All of the images are generously sized. So even though I chose to only use the bud, it's still large enough to hold it's own.

I had Daniel Smith watercolors sitting on my desk when I was deciding whether I wanted to Copic-color these or watercolor, so I went with the latter.

After stamping images in VersaFine Onyx Black ink (I love to use this ink for watercolor) onto Arches Hot Press watercolor paper I used a medium sized water brush and quickly colored my stamped images and the space inbetween. I used Daniel Smith 238 Dot Chart and picked Quinacridone Pink, Green Gold, Olive Green and Cobalt Teal Blue colors (you can see this chart in action on video in one of my previous posts). Later I came in with a detailed brush and intensified the color in several sections on each of my images.

I intentionally didn’t leave any room on my background for a sentiment as I knew I wanted it stamped on a separate panel and foam mounted onto the card. I used the same black ink and added a strip of gold glitter tape for some interest.

Lastly, after adhering my stamped and watercolored panel onto an A2 top folding card base, I added clear dots using Nuvo Drops in Morning Dew.

May 2017 Release Week: Little Dreamers with Joni

We thought we'd kick of this release with a dose of cuteness overload! But don't worry, this is the kind of cute anyone can get behind. Cute and sweet, yet charming with a hint of whimsy - thanks to the wonderful illustration style of Stephany Zerbe.

I wanted to create a deep yet vibrant night sky as a backdrop for these little guys. And I knew that a distressed ink blending technique would be perfect for this. I began by distressing a white cardstock panel with Tim Holtz Distress Inks in Chipped Sapphire and Peacock Feathers. Then splattered it with water and let it dry to create the spattering of water marks to break up the solid color. Then, I added some gold splatter using Gansai Tambi Starry Colors.

To color the cute critters, I stamped them all in a Copic safe ink and then colored them with Copic Markers.

I die-cut the distressed panel using the scalloped rectangle from the Sunshine Layers Die and adhered the die-cut images with foam tape. I stamped the sentiment "Reach for the Stars", also included in the same stamp set in PURE COLOR Dye Ink in Black. I decided to also distress the card base with Tim Holtz Distress Ink in Chipped Sapphire to match the distressing on the focal panel. Some sequins from Pretty Pink Posh finish off the card.

I couldn't stop at one card. So for this second card, I wanted to create an all-over background by simply stamping the images directly on my card panel and coloring them with Copic markers.

This time I mounted it onto a pink card base for a pop of color. The sentiment was white heat embossed onto black cardstock and also adhered with foam tape to finish off the card.
