Making Old New Again w/Kara

Hello! I'm back with another holiday card to share with you. I've pulled out some of my older favorites and mixed in a few new dies to create a winter scene.

Because of the size and shape of this stamp from Snowflake Backdrops it feels like you're looking through a window watching the snow fall. I love to add two colors of blue to the stamp before applying it to my cardstock panel. I tend to reach for Nautical Navy and Lake House dye ink for this.
I die cut Simple Snowflake from vellum and the largest snowflake from Snowflake Trio out of white cardstock and layered them up. On top of that I placed the happy holidays banner from the new Holiday Presents Die.

I tucked in the little heart that I die cut using the heart die from Cookies & Cocoa. I added a few gemstones to finish it off.
I hope today's post has inspired you to revisit some of the existing items in your stash! As always, thanks for stopping by!

GUEST ARTIST FEATURE: Getting Cosy w/Debby Hughes ft. COOKIES & COCOA

Hi, Debby here today with a little cosy watercolouring!

Watch above or watch in HD at YouTube

Let's jump straight in! I used the Cookies & Cocoa set for this card in a style I'm drawn to - that of a focal point of no-line watercolour on an otherwise clean and simple card. I started with a piece of Arches Cold Pressed watercolour card in the Misti and stamped the outline cup image from the Cookies & Cocoa set in Antique Linen Distress ink three times and popped the marshmallows image on top of each cup.

I painted the cups with Daniel Smith watercolours. I chose three colours for the cups which were inspired by some candles I just bought. Although I enjoy all the bright traditional colours of the winter season, I'm always more drawn to muted shades and so for this card I challenged myself to use the muted colours I love. I mixed a grey-green, a dilute pink and a dusky, grey purple. To finish off the painting I added a light shadow beneath the cups which I blended out with plenty of water. This helped ground the cups and stopped them looking like they are floating in mid-air. Then I took a little white gouache and added a few highlights. Gouache is an opaque watercolour and will show up even when painted on a darker colour. Once I was happy with the watercolour on the cups, I splattered a little of the green watercolour mixture around the card and then I added splatters of a solution of Perfect Pearls. This is one of my most favourite ways to add sparkle, highlights and that ethereal look that I like.

I stamped accent images from the Cookies & Cocoa set on the cups with clear embossing ink and white heat embossed - two snowflakes for the cups in the foreground and a heart for the pink cup at the back. I then trimmed the panel down and foam mounted on a Desert Storm card base. For the sentiment, I chose the "It's time to get cozy greeting" from the Cookies and Cocoa set. I treated a scrap of Slate card with a powder tool, stamped the sentiment in clear embossing ink, sprinkled with white embossing powder and heat set. I then used a scalpel and ruler to trim the piece into a banner to add to the card. I struggle with straight lines and find this method to be the most reliable as I can use the lines on the clear ruler to ensure I'm cutting things straight. I foam mounted the sentiment banner on the card and used a T-square ruler to ensure I had it on straight.

To finish off the card I added a few sequins in toning pastel colours to bring in a little more sparkle for the season and kept those in place with Nuvo Deluxe adhesive.

Thanks for joining me today and I hope you enjoyed seeing these cosy cocoa cups come to life.

~Debby

Simply Colored Snowflake w/Kara ft. MERRIEST SNOWFLAKE

Hey Guys! I'm back with another holiday card using non-traditional colors. Just as with the pink on my last card, I feel like these colors add to the cool, icy feeling of the season.

This time I used the new Merriest Snowflake for my design. I stamped the large image several times to create an all-over background design. I then colored the snowflake with blues and a bit of yellow. I outlined the images with a light grey marker to create a subtle shadow and make the design pop against the white cardstock.

I added a die cut sentiment from the new Sending Cheer Die. I coated the die cut as well as the yellow areas with shimmer from a Wink Of Stella pen.

So beautiful, so simple and so easy to mail! I'll be making a few more of these to send to friends and family.

Thanks so much for stopping by! I hope you have a wonderful Thanksgiving filled with family and lots of love!

GUEST ARTIST FEATURE: Watercolored Holiday Cards w/Norine Borys

Hello, hi!

Norine Borys back with you again today for a Guest Post to share some cards created using the latest WPlus9 release. There are some beautiful sets in this release, and I had a difficult time choosing which to use first!

I began with the Merriest Snowflake stamp set. I stamped a random pattern of snowflakes and stars to loosely fill in the background of several A2 sized pieces of watercolor paper with Versamark ink, and heat embossed with white embossing powder. I couldn’t decide which color scheme I really wanted to use, so I did a variety and ended up loving these three.

Creating color blends like this is very simple. I washed the whole card panel with water, then daubed in two to three different colors and let them blend and mix however they like. After letting the first layer dry, I went back and added a little more color. Watercolor paints dry back lighter than they first go on, so the blue/grey and green/turquoise in particular, needed a bit more intensity.

Setting aside the watercolor card panels to dry, I then stamped "Merriest Wishes - from our home to yours" onto vellum strips, which I also heat embossed with white embossing powder. I wrapped the vellum sentiment strips around the watercolored panel and adhered them on the back. Then I adhered the card panels to a coordinating color of card stock and added that to a card base. A few colored Nuvo drops to coordinate complete each card.

These are very quick and simple options for anyone looking for mass-production card ideas.

Next I used Cookies and Cocoa stamp set.

These cards were a little more labor intensive as I stamped the images onto masking paper and cut them out so that I could build the scene. I really enjoy that kind of card making so I didn’t mind the extra effort. I loved adding the partial snowflake images to the mugs by masking the outside of the cup and stamping the snowflakes with Versamark and heat embossing with white embossing powder.

If you'd like to know more about the cards, please head over to my blog for more photos and a run down on creating them!

Thanks for stopping by today, and thank you to WPlus9 for the chance to play again with such delightful stamp designs!

~Norine

Glittered Snowflakes w/Dawn ft. FOLK ART FLURRIES

Hello crafty friends! I'm back with more glitter! I know, I know...glitter. I'm blaming it on the holiday season.

But, in my defense, it's glitter embossing powder. So slightly less traumatic. ;o) And can you blame me? These cards are gorgeous, and pretty easy to pull together. So easy in fact, that I created a trio of them. Be sure to watch below to see how these all came together.

Watch above or watch in HD at YouTube

I've been on a kick with the glittered embossing powders lately. I love how quickly you can add tons of sparkle to your projects without a lot of fuss. I paired a few of them up with our Folk Art Flurries stamp set to stamp a fun glittered patterned paper of snowflakes.

I also used the glitter embossing powders to create some DIY glitter cardstock to die cut snowflakes from them using our Snowflake Trio Die. They make a beautiful backdrop for the sentiments when layered together on top of a dry embossed snowflake created using our Simple Snowflake Die.

There are tons of glitter embossing powders on the market, but you can also create your own. This is perfect if you want to test the waters and see if it's something you'd like, before jumping in to purchase.

I mixed equal parts of a colored embossing powder and loose glitter together to create this one. I just love the depth of color and shimmer I was able to create.

The clean and simple layout of this card set really lets that sparkle and shine take center stage without competing with it. I left everything monochromatic and let the embossing powders add the color. Even the sentiment, die cut from Oatmeal cardstock using our Holiday Presents Die, was left tone-on-tone.

The entire focal point is compact and centered on a label from our Holly Jolly Die. I love how big this label is. It definitely carries the card and keeps all of the focus right where it should be.

All of the cards were finished off with a sprinkling of jewels from Studio Katia and Pretty Pink Posh. I've linked all of the products I used on today's projects below. I wasn't able to find a few, perhaps they've been discontinued, so in some cases I've linked good substitutions where applicable.

I really don't usually hit the glitter this hard, but like I said, I'm gonna blame it on the Holiday's! How about you? Is there something that you reserve just for the Holiday's?

Thanks so much for stopping by, I hope your weekend is going well!
