Hello Crafters! Do you ever find yourself in a crafty rut?
Sometimes that means not being able to create anything we like at all but other times it means always creating the same types of cards. Lately me and scene cards go together like peas and carrots. I love scene cards. Don't get me wrong. But sometimes I don't have an hour and a half to devote to creating a single card.
In order to take a break I thought I would just sit down and play with colors. Since I was playing with colors anyway I thought it would be fun to compare Tim Holtz Distress Inks to Distress Oxides. There's been a ton of comparisons done but what I really wanted to see was color to color what was the difference.
I got out a rainbow of colors and some favorite stamps and went to work. You can see the cards from start to finish in the video below.
I really love the way the design turned out, and honestly whether you use regular Distress Ink or Distress Oxides, you're going to get a great result.
The regular Distress Inks were a bit brighter but the Distress Oxides were easier to blend. The one drawback to the Distress Oxides is because of how opaque they are, they do dull the back outline. It's not a huge issue but when you love bold black as much as I do it's definitely noticeable.
Thank you guys so much for joining me today! What is your preference Distress Inks or Distress Oxides?

Beautiful cards, Kelly! I especially love your examples for people like me who shy away from coloring images. Your cards show you can create gorgeous color by sponging the BG, and create wonderful contrast by leaving the image white. Loved the comparison of inks on your video too - thank you!
ReplyDeleteLovely cards Kelly. My preference is the original Distress Inks. I really love the true clear colour of the originals and I don't particularly like the chalkiness and veiled colours of the Oxides. Having said that, I have bought a few of the colours in Oxides and have made some nice backgrounds for cards, but I could well live without them.
ReplyDeleteBEAUTIFULLY DONE VIDEO, Kelly! I LOVE the simplicity of what you've done, & the comparisons too. I only have a few of the Original Distress Inks, but I LOVE the idea of the ease of blending of the Oxide Inks from the Original Inks. When you get older, it is harder to do all that blending. LOL Both have their plus'! ;)
ReplyDeleteHi Kelly ~ These cards are simply lovely. Love the black and white floral images on the beautifully blended Distress background. I've been a Distress Ink junkie for a few years and then the Oxides came on the scene last year and I'm over the moon. Love the comparison you've shared and appreciate the time you took to do it. ~HUGS~

Lovely cards. Thanks for the video comparing the inks.
ReplyDeleteThey are all beautiful Kelly. I have never tried the Oxides but they look smooth and easy to work with however I prefer the brightness of the old Distress inks best.
ReplyDeleteBoth sets of cards are very pretty! I was wondering- if you had kept your stamp in the same place on the MISTI, do you think you could stamp the black outline again, after the inks have been blended to get the darker black lines again on the Oxide cards?
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely that would work!
DeleteBeautiful cards kelly ! I loved the backgrounds wth distress ink more..the brighter look:) Thanks for the video enjoyed watching it :)
ReplyDeleteKelly I love this look and your technique. I'm still using distress inks, no oxides, but I might have to take the plunge. Dang, it would take me forever to make that mask! Thanks for the video!
ReplyDeleteThanks so much for sharing these lovely cards. The video was so helpful--not only for seeing how you created but also the difference between the two distress inks.
