May 2017 Release Week: Modern Peonies with Yana

Hello and welcome back to our May 2017 Release previews! All of the new products that we will be sharing with you over the next couple of days will be available for purchase beginning May 5, 2017 at wplus9.com as well as at many of your favorite retailers. Today, we have a new floral set that we hope you will love. Illustrated in the same style as our previously released Modern Petunias, the Modern Peonies stamp set and Modern Peonies Companion Die are a great addition to our floral family.

Every floral stamp set holds a number of creative possibilities and the Modern Peonies set is no exception. One can stamp and die-cut flowers to arrange them into a gorgeous floral cluster or realistic looking bouquet; stamp, mask off and stamp some more to create a stunning one layer floral arrangement; combine all images or use a single flower to create unique stamped patterns.

I decided to not do the obvious today, but rather take just one image from the Modern Peonies stamp set and use it to stamp a gorgeous, somewhat random pattern. I picked the smallest flower, a flower bud, but one can also use large and medium sized flower to create similar looking patterns.

One of the wonderful things about this set is it's scale. All of the images are generously sized. So even though I chose to only use the bud, it's still large enough to hold it's own.

I had Daniel Smith watercolors sitting on my desk when I was deciding whether I wanted to Copic-color these or watercolor, so I went with the latter.

After stamping images in VersaFine Onyx Black ink (I love to use this ink for watercolor) onto Arches Hot Press watercolor paper I used a medium sized water brush and quickly colored my stamped images and the space inbetween. I used Daniel Smith 238 Dot Chart and picked Quinacridone Pink, Green Gold, Olive Green and Cobalt Teal Blue colors (you can see this chart in action on video in one of my previous posts). Later I came in with a detailed brush and intensified the color in several sections on each of my images.

I intentionally didn’t leave any room on my background for a sentiment as I knew I wanted it stamped on a separate panel and foam mounted onto the card. I used the same black ink and added a strip of gold glitter tape for some interest.

Lastly, after adhering my stamped and watercolored panel onto an A2 top folding card base, I added clear dots using Nuvo Drops in Morning Dew.
