GUEST ARTIST FEATURE: Gettin' Sassy w/Janette Kausen ft. Flock Yeah!

Good day to you! It’s Janette Kausen here, guesting with you today. I am so happy to be back! A little something about me? I’ve got a thing about flamingos and sass. It has gotten me in the hot seat a time or two. The sass, not the flamingos! When Wplus9 released the Flock Yeah! set… gasp! It jumped in my cart, ASAP. It had to come live with me!

I began by stamping the flamingo, palms and crown from Flock Yeah! in Pure Color Black Dye ink on smooth Bristol paper. I then clear embossed the images to create a well for color. Embossing is not necessary, unless like me, you are impatient and want to paint wet colors right next to each other. I like to lay down a base color with watercolor markers, blend with water and then go back and add deep rich colors enhancing depth, shadows and detail. There is something about adding layers, and second or third colors from other color families, that make me swoon! Green leaves with a touch of blue. Pinks with a splash of orange. It really is where watercolor comes to life, yum!

While the watercolor dried, I die cut a circle into a 4 1/8” x 5 3/8” white cardstock panel. I placed the panel into a Misti replacing the circle die cut back into is original space. After adding two small loops of invisible wrapping style tape I picked up the circle with the Misti lid. I then nestled the Flock Yeah! sentiment against the circle (still adhered to the lid) curving the photopolymer stamp to match the arch of the circle. I inked it up in Black Pure Color ink and stamped the sentiment with precision!

Once all the images were dry, I die cut them, with the exception of the Hibiscus Bouquet, which I fussy cut. I arranged them within the circle, tucking some edges under, others over, and then covered them carefully with Press’n Seal. When pressed in place well, the Press’n Seal securely holds the images without disrupting their placement or damaging them. I turned the panel over and applied foam tape to the back being cautious of areas that could be seen from the front.

Finally, I removed the Press’n Seal and with all die cuts secure, I adhered the panel onto a 4 1/4” x 5 1/2” folded card base. I added a touch more foam tape behind the flamingo and orange flowers, for dimension. A few sequins add the requisite sparkle.

Thank you for joining me today, and, thank you to the crew at Wplus9 for inviting me to another adventure into creativity! I hope you’ve been inspired and I’ll see you again!

xo, Janette

Big Tropical Birthday Wishes With Kara

Hey guys! I'm still on a birthday card making kick. It makes me so happy to see my birthday stash grow knowing I'll have the cards ready to go when I need them.

This new Birthday Wishes stamp set makes it so easy to turn any design into a birthday card. I love the gorgeous ;font and the variety of sentiment sizes included in this set. It's so easy to customize the perfect sentiment for your design. I don't know about you, but my sentiment usually comes last and has to fit into my design. I do occasionally start with the sentiment as the focus of the design, but not typically.

I started by die cutting this large stitched circle from Love Mom Layers, a classic WPlus9 die set. I then stamped the Hibiscus Bouquet around the circle in Copic friendly ink. If you wanted to create a custom bouquet, you could use the individual flower images from Tropic Fever as well. I colored the leaves with YG11, YG13 and YG17. I colored the flowers with Y13, Y15 and YR04. Then I decided a colored background would really make the colors pop! I used BG13 and BG23.

Finally, I added the sentiments from Birthday Wishes in black. One, I stamped on the large circle and inset it into the opening and another directly over the Copic coloring.

Thank you so much for stopping by today! Hope your week is off to a great start!

Being "Extra" with Kara

Hey Guys! It's Kara and I'm back with another project featuring tons of new release products. The main focus is on Flock Yeah!, but many other sets play a supporting role.

I used this cool circle die from Oh My Gostrich! to create a window as I like to do. I feel like it just helps to ground my focal images into a little scene. It also gives me an opportunity to give a little peek at something interesting, but subtle in the background. In this case it's the Trellis 2 Die. I used it as an embossing plate rather than a cutting plate by using embossing mats in my die cutting machine. The result is this really fun texture!

I used the cool new sentiment from Birthday Wishes as a platform for my flamingo to stand on. I often double up my die cuts and adhere them together with dimensional adhesive. I love the dimension and the look you get from the side!

I hope you've enjoyed today's project! Thanks for stopping by!

For my coloring project today, I decided to share a fun watercolor technique.

Watch above or watch in HD at YouTube

This fun illustrative style has a very carefree feel and I'm loving it!

I used the new Fierce and Fabulous and Hibiscus Bouquet stamp sets to create today's cards. I stamped everything in our Black ink and then used Distress Ink to watercolor the images. I loosely painted in each layer of color, allowing each layer to completely dry between. This kept each layer separate and distinct creating a more illustrative than watercolored look.

I share a couple other versions in the video, so make sure to watch it.
